Daniel Ricciardo and McLaren split at the end of the F1 season after a buyout was negotiated with the Australians in the final year of their contract.
Ricciardo retained the option of a McLaren seat for 2023, but his performances have been underwhelming through 35 races. Although he recorded his first F1 win for McLaren since 2012 with his win at Monza last September, Ricciardo has outdone team-mate Lando Norris on nearly every race weekend.
Ricciardo, 33, has just finished on the podium once for McLaren and has scored just 19 points this season. Norris has one podium finish this season and has 76 points.
“It has been an honor to be part of the McLaren Racing family for the past two seasons”, a mutual agreement to end the contract one year early.
“In due course I will announce my plans for the future, but regardless of what this next chapter brings, I have no regrets and am proud of the effort and work I gave McLaren, especially the victory at Monza last season. Yes,” Ricardo added. “I’ve never been more excited to compete and be a part of the sport I love, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.”
McLaren boss Zak Brown acknowledged in May that Ricciardo’s seat was unstable, saying there was a “mechanism” that could split drivers and teams ahead of the 2023 season. The mechanism turned out to be a buyout, as Ricciardo retained the option for next season.
Early reports suggested that Ricciardo was asking for more than $20 million to leave the team early, but McLaren is believed to have paid $15 million to end his contract.
McLaren is widely believed to have won the seats of fellow Australian F2 champions Oscar Piastri and Ricciardo. Although there is no announcement from McLaren, Piastri has turned down the promotion to F1 from Alpine.
“Daniel has been a great addition to McLaren and it has been a pleasure to work with him,” said Brown. “We all knew we wanted to achieve more together, but seeing him on the top step of the podium as a McLaren driver was a highlight.”
Following their victory at Monza, Brown and Ricciardo traveled to a tattoo parlor in Texas to allow Brown to commemorate the victory with permanent Monza circuit ink on his arm. He also rewarded Ricardo by allowing him to drive the late Dale Earnhardt’s iconic Chevrolet Stock Car No. 3 in a demonstration at the Circuit of the Americas. I was. Braun owned a car and Ricardo adored Earnhardt as a child.
McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl thanked Ricciardo for his “dedication and contribution” since joining the team.
“Despite the common challenges, he has always demonstrated his fighting spirit and positivity, helping the whole team to always keep moving forward,” Seidl said. “I will never forget the memorable race win at Monza, which was a huge boost for the whole team. For the rest of the season there are important battles ahead for the Constructors’ championship. land.”
Norris and Ricciardo helped McLaren finish fourth in last season’s Constructors’ Championship.
One of F1’s most popular drivers, Ricciardo is now in his 12th season and has eight career wins.
