The writing has been on the wall for some time. As part of the European Union’s new directive to reduce e-waste, Apple must put his USB-C port on iPhones, which now use their own Lightning cable. This direction was further reinforced through an interview with Vice by the company’s vice president of marketing, in which Joanna Stern confirmed that Apple will comply with the new regulations. A new European directive requires all smartphone makers to use USB-C ports, but Apple is the only one to cling to a phone-only port. According to Vice’s article, Stern made it “fully clear” that the company wasn’t happy with the change.

Another piece of Apple news. A new study found that the Apple Watch is just as reliable as medical devices at detecting blood oxygen levels. A validation study published in the archives of the National Library of Medicine compared the Apple Watch to a medical-grade oximeter. In conclusion, this study concluded that this watch can be used to reliably detect blood oxygen saturation below 90% outside the clinic. This is highly regarded as a consumer grade device.

Google’s financial report drops with surprising news. The company’s quarterly profit fell 27% compared to the same quarter last year. Google’s revenue grew 6% to $69.1 billion, still slower than his 41% growth in Q3 2021. Earnings declined year-over-year to $13.9 billion from $18.9 billion. The company cited a slowdown in Google’s bread and butter advertising business. The leadership team seems to have seen this coming. Last month, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai called for a productivity overhaul, asking the company’s employees to become more “mission-focused” and more efficient. “

A joint research project by scientists from Danish, Swedish and Japanese universities has created a chip capable of transferring about 2 petabits of data per second. According to PC Gamer’s article, this is basically the internet today, the internet as a whole. While not a record breaker, the key factor here is throughput on a single, more compact system. The achievement, the scientists say, reveals undiscovered potential when it comes to optimizing network performance.
