When Toronto director and choreographer Tim French auditions singers for musical revues like Stage West’s One Hit Wonders, he says he’s looking for vocal athletes.

On Stage West through February 5, One Hit Wonders features over 50 artists who had smash hits in the past 70 years but didn’t make the next one. Some have never even tried. they just disappeared.

“What we want from these pop-rock revue singers is the same as a marathon. We need multiple artists, not just those from , which means these singers have to be very versatile.” Motown Gold, Uptown Country Girls, Canadian Explosion, California Dreaming.

“The audience wants the performance of these songs to be as faithful as possible. They loved these songs, so they want to hear them, feel them, celebrate them. Accompanied by demeanor and quirky wardrobes, singers need to have a sense of humor and participate in jokes as the audience laughs when they remember them.”

French and Peche created One Hit Wonders in 2008, which was such a hit that they followed up with Two Hit Wonders. Stage West viewers have been calling for One Hit Wonders to return, but French says the show needed to be renewed.

“We have to cover a whole new decade with artists like Gotier and the songs that gave us the Somebody That I Used To Know song I knew in 2011. It won three Grammy Awards and was a huge hit internationally. I’m demonstrating the strength of this blow.”

French also points out that Rockwell’s 1984 single “Somebody’s Watching Me” was his only hit.

“Rockwell is the son of Berry Gordy, CEO of Motown Records. He hated it and brought the song to his father who refused to record it, so he went elsewhere. He had Michael and Jermaine Jackson on backing vocals and achieved major international successes like “Somebody That I Used to Know.” We combine two songs with Thomas Dolby’s She Blinded Me with Science, Devo’s Whip It, and Falco’s Rock Me Amadeus and call them Eccentric Wonders.

There are 11 different sets including My Sharona by The Knack, Mickey by Toni Basil, 99 Red Balloons by Nena and New Wave Wonders including Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and Wave. It shows how different decades have produced certain styles of music.
