Mackenzie, whose Guardians beat the Yankees, is great in 7 innings

Cleveland-Triston McKenzie shut down the New York smash lineup in seven innings with one batter and close-knit Emanuel Klass, beating the Cleveland Guardians 2-0 on Sunday.

Franmil Reyes drove on both runs in Cleveland. When the Guardian saved the finale of the series, he hit the home ring the fourth time and the clutch RBI single the eighth time.

Mackenzie (5-6) allowed only a broken bat single to Josh Donaldson for the fourth time. A right-handed player who gave up a home run and was injured this season kept the ball in the park and lost the Yankees’ balance.

Eli Morgan worked eighth 1-2-3 before giving way to AL’s top relief Crace in June. The Yankees loaded based on two outs on two walks. Once was a pinch hit Aaron Judge. After that, Crace placed Aaron Hicks in second place and made his 19th save with 21 chances.

Hicks fell to .138 (8 for 58) in his career with the base loaded.

The Yankees have suffered their sixth defeat in 32 games since May 31st.

New York won the first two games of the series and swept the doubleheader on Saturday with a total of 19-5. The best baseball teams seemed ready to take the entire 3-game set and 6-game season series against Cleveland.

However, Mackenzie, who gave up multiple home runs in six of the previous eight outings, got off to a great start. He walked only one and hit seven. It also helped the Yankees rest the judge and DJ LeMahieu.

Reyes hit a home run four times against Jordan Montgomery (3-2), a rare event in which the Yankees team won at a record pace.

After the Guardians almost exhausted the threat, Reyes came back eighth by grounding the single to the right to win the Amed Rosary.

The Yankees reached the mark of 80 games at 58-22. This is the third best start in many games since 1930.

Reyes, who recently returned after missing 23 games with a tense hamstring, moved the Guardians 1-0 to 4th in his sixth home run. Reyes turned on the 1-1 curve ball and sent it over the wall of the left wing.

Judgment Day

The Yankees didn’t start a major-leading judge with 29 home runs, but didn’t connect during the Cleveland series. Earlier this week, Judges joined Babe Ruth (32), Roger Maris (30) and Mickey Mantle (29) as the only players to complete 29 home runs in the team’s first 76 games.

REST UP

Guardians star third baseman Jose Ramirez also took a break. He was dealing with pain in the ligaments of his thumb and went 1 to 7 on Saturday with four strikeouts.

The Yankees exchanged left-handed Manny Bañuelos for Pittsburgh in exchange for cash. Banuelos played four games in New York and won one save. He was also with the Braves and the White Sox.

The Guardians regained outfielder Oscar Mercado during the match with an exemption from Philadelphia. Mercado was appointed by Cleveland on June 21st and claimed by Phillies six days later. He had one at bat before being designated on July 1st.

Yankees: RHP Domingo German (shoulder impingement) was planning to start a third rehab on Sunday with the Double A Somerset as it is working towards expected returns later this month. … Boone received a good report on RHP Jonathan Roaishiga (shoulder inflammation) after practicing batting in Tampa, Florida. Loáisiga will have another session on Tuesday.

Guardians: C Austin Hedges remains on the sidelines. He practiced battering between matches on Saturday, but has not yet been allowed to return.

Guardians: Play yet another doubleheader, 7th, and this in Detroit. Zach Plesac (2-5, 3.86) will make his major league debut by starting an opener with rookie Garrett Hill. LHP Connor Pilkington (1-1, 4.31) will start his second match against RHP Alex Faed (1-4, 4.84).
