LL Cool J took to his Instagram on Thursday to give a lesson about honoring the man who made hip-hop history. “No one is discussing Miles Davis’ bank account,” the 54-year-old said. “We don’t talk about John Coltrane’s bank account. The idea of no is a bad idea and a wrong way of looking at the world and culture.”

The 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee pointed out that the business of hip-hop in the ’70s and ’80s was very different from what it is today.

“When hip-hop first started, no managers believed it, no accountants believed it. No record companies believed it. No one believed it,” LL explained. “How can you make a five-year plan or a ten-year plan for something that doesn’t even exist yet?”

“Even so [hip hop pioneers] Just because we haven’t been able to rack up millions and billions of dollars, just because we haven’t gotten rich, doesn’t mean we haven’t contributed to this culture. They created an industry that we all prey on. The 2017 Kennedy Center Honors recipient added: “What do you guess when you monetize a brand, negotiate a deal, negotiate a check, talk tough? That industry was created by the same people you call foul language.”

The rapper went on to say he’s always thought about ‘getting paper’, but cautioned not to confuse ‘being rich’ with ‘contributing to our culture’. I did. Please don’t act like that again. ”
