Vernon’s Spirit Square lit up with holiday spirit on Saturday night.

The Vernon Winter Carnival Society kicked off its Carnival of Lights event hosted by MHC Mortgage House on November 26th from 5-8pm in the square next to City Hall.

Portions of 30th Street closed to traffic to make way for about 35 vendors set up on the road at an event featuring food trucks, artisans, crafts, games, live ice carving, and lots of twinkling lights became.

The lights are on daily from 5pm to 8pm until the end of December, then back on for the 10-day Vernon Winter Carnival from February 3rd to the 12th.

Vicki Proulx, who is stepping down as Executive Director of the Vernon Winter Carnival Society, said: She said, “Vernon’s lighting up may not be exactly what people remember, but it’s great that Winter her carnival shows a community spirit. It’s what we’re all about.”

This year’s Carnival of Lights is bigger and better than ever, a big step up from last year’s event, which was hampered by COVID-19 restrictions.

“It’s really the first time we’ve had an event of this magnitude and it’s great to see so many people here,” said Proulx.

Local businesses were handing out free stuff or selling merchandise to people looking to finish their Christmas shopping early.

This will be Proulx’s sixth festival and her last as Kris Fuller succeeds her as executive director of the association.

“She’s having the best time so far, so you can see the two of us working through the winter carnival,” Prue said.

It takes a lot of work to host an event. Proulx said it took him a day with 20 volunteers to install all the lights.

“We’re always looking for volunteers because it takes a lot of manpower,” she said, thanking Fox and Sons for helping install the lights.
