Elementary school in West Kelowna evacuated due to lingering odor

Students moved to Glenrosa Middle School gymnasium

Staff and students at Helen Gorman Elementary School had a chaotic day after a prolonged stench forced them to evacuate.

Central Okanagan schools moved students to nearby middle schools while staff ensured air quality was safe.

The stench was determined to be from the sealant used in the maintenance of the school’s foundations.

In recent months, aggressive radon screening of schools in Central Okanagan found that two areas of Helen Gorman received inspections close to Health Canada’s recommended thresholds.

School districts have said immediate action will be taken if levels are close to the threshold, and mitigation is already completed or underway in some of the schools found to be close to the threshold.

The students remained in the Glen Rosa Middle School gymnasium for the day.
