“Licoris Pizza” gets a backlash in a scene with a fake Asian accent

“Licoris Pizza” is a controversial scene and has been criticized prior to its release.

In the movie, a white man John Michael Higgins plays a fake Asian accent that speaks to a Japanese wife. He later repeats this with his new Japanese wife in the movie.

“Imagine this: you’re looking at a licorice pizza. It’s great,” writes David Chen. Hosting Twitter’s “Culturally Relevant” podcast..

“Then, early on, a whimsical character drops an Asian caricature. The (almost white) audience laughs. And now you have to think about the rest of the movie about that laugh.”

Screenwriter Karen Maine also used social media to discuss the scene.

“Licorice Pizza” is starring Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper and Alana Haim.

The coming-of-age film is set in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles in the 1970s.
