LETTERS: McCallum was elected on pledge to move to municipal police force

Like former Mayor Doug McCallum or not, it is undeniable that he and his slate were originally elected on a pledge to replace the RCMP in Surrey.

Suffice to say, anyone who voted for him knew that.

To that end, it is reported some $100 million has been spent over the past four years to bring about that transition.

Calls from others to stop the process and absorb the costs to date (without, it would appear, a clear understanding of how much has actually been spent) and/or hold a referendum to ask the voters what they want to happen is, in the end, nonsense.

Mayor Brenda Locke has said the results of the election speak for themselves. She believes she is carrying out the will of her constituents.

What about McCallum’s constituents four years ago?

Fewer than 35 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot in one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities, replacing an incumbent mayor by 973 votes.

You can’t keep spending money and holding votes until you get the desired results.
