James Cameron discusses how 13-year lag between ‘Avatar’ films will affect sequel success

To Brent Furdick.

Debuting in 2009, Avatar is the highest-grossing film in Hollywood history, grossing over $2.9 billion worldwide.

Set for release on December 16th, the long-awaited sequel, Avatar: Path of Water, spans 13 years between the first film and its sequel.

in a new interview with hollywood reporterthe film’s director, James Cameron, is addressing that time gap and considering how much he thinks it could affect the success of the new film.

“There’s skepticism in the market and they’re like, ‘Oh, have you ever had a real cultural impact?'” he said. “Does anyone remember the character’s name?”

According to Cameron, it’s unfair to compare “Avatar” to “Star Wars” or the Marvel franchise.

“We will be back within the next three years if we have extraordinary success,” he explained. “That’s how the industry works. Come back to the well and build that cultural impact over time. So it’s an irrelevant discussion. We’ll see what happens after this movie.”

In fact, Cameron has somewhat grander plans for the “Avatar” franchise. “I want to tell big stories in a lot of movies. Of course they had books. I had to write a book first, but this is not a book, it’s a script,” he explained.

In fact, Cameron is already filming Avatar 3, due for release in 2024, has begun production on the fourth film (due in 2026), and has already written the script for the fifth film (2028). Given that it’s already on track.

“It’s all written out, bow to stern, four scripts and it’s completely designed,” says Cameron. “If there is an opportunity, we know exactly where it will go. And if people want it, if they like this movie enough, the opportunity will simply be market-driven.”

If there is public demand, Cameron also has plans for a sixth and seventh “Avatar” film. “I’ll be 89 by then,” Cameron said.

With that in mind, he’s already started thinking about who will take over the franchise from him.”I need to train someone how to do this.
