Lake Ontario warns Toronto police marine units that it could be “extremely dangerous” for swimmers and boaters.

Police in Toronto are calling on people to be especially careful when swimming or boating on Lake Ontario this summer.

Most recently, last Friday, a marine unit rescued several paddleboarders and kayaks that had been blown up to 5 nautical miles (about 8 kilometers) from the shores of Lake Ontario.

Police said they found someone stuck on the way to rescue another paddleboarder who had a cell phone and could ask for help.

The Marine Unit said in a June 22 release that drowning is a real possibility for troubled boaters and water sports enthusiasts.

“In windy conditions and rough waters, it is not uncommon for waves to occur in lakes above 3 meters high. These windy conditions may not be apparent from land, but with the help of motors. Dingies bought at stores that affect all paddleboards, kayaks, inflatables, and small boats, not just water boats that help you rent and return to the shore, “said police.

“These winds can quickly push you into the lake.”

Marine forces said Lake Ontario, which is “sometimes very dangerous”, should not be compared to the smaller “cottage” lakes.

“The waters of Lake Ontario are very cold, people can quickly become hypothermic, and there is little chance of survival if they are in the water for long periods of time,” police said after checking the people’s ocean forecasts. I urged you to go out. Those using water, especially paddleboards and kayaks.

The Marine Unit also encourages swimmers and boaters to dress according to the water temperature, not the temperature, and to always wear a life jacket.

They said it was a good idea to carry a cell phone or mobile VHF radio on the water.

Finally, police are urging swimmers and boaters to let someone know that they are heading to the water, where they are leaving, where they are going, and how long they plan to go out.

“All this information is important in case people run into trouble on the water and contact the marine unit to conduct a life-saving search and rescue,” they said.
