Knights’ hamper campaign full speed ahead
By Times Chronicle Staff
The Knights of Columbus in Oliver expect to provide more than 200 hampers during its Christmas campaign this year.
Coordinator Wayne Danbrook said the need continues to be high as evidenced by how busy the Oliver Food Bank is. He noted the situation is exacerbated by skyrocketing food prices. But he said this has not resulted in the Knights “skimping” on the hampers that are filled with non-perishables, ham, and canned goods.
Collection boxes have been placed in various businesses such as Buy-Low Foods, Shoppers Drug Mart, The Bargain! Shop, and NoFrills.
Danbrook said people in need of a Christmas hamper have to register at the food bank on Station Street. Once registered, they will be given a slip that must be presented at Christ the King Church on Saturday, Dec. 17.
Prior to the pandemic, the Knights delivered the hampers to recipients. But now people pick them up at the curb in the church parking lot. Under special circumstances the Knights will arrange to deliver hampers to people who cannot pick them up. Call 250-498-2745 to arrange that.
Danbrook said the curbside pickup program is working very well, noting it is efficient and gratifying.
He gave special mention to Jo Tanner from Oliver Missions for her help in the campaign.
Danbrook said monetary donations are most welcome since 80 per cent of the food in the hampers is purchased.
People can make their cheques payable to the Knights of Columbus Hamper Project at Box 343, Oliver, B.C, V0H 1T0.
