UPDATE: Man charged with stabbing in Nanaimo yesterday

A Nanaimo RCMP investigation into yesterday’s Harewood stabbing has identified an injured man as the perpetrator of the incident.

At approximately 4:15 a.m. on Thursday, November 24, emergency services were called to the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Bruce Avenue, and a 32-year-old man suffered serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries that were described as “staggering.” According to the press release, he went into a nearby 7-Eleven for medical help.

The injured man was treated at the scene by BC Emergency Services paramedics and taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital where he was released.

The RCMP said it was able to review surveillance footage and “revealed” that the injured person was the one who initiated the altercation. Officers went to his house and arrested him on suspicion of assault with a weapon.

“Based on the evidence so far, investigators believe that the defendant, who has mental health problems, launched a unilateral attack on a marginalized person of no fixed address. I have,” said Reservist Const. Released by Gary O’Brien, spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP.

The person allegedly attacked in the incident has been identified and was not injured.
