Christmas at the “Kelly Clarkson Show” is coming early.

In Friday’s episode, Kelly Clarkson captivated the audience with a moving cover of Joni Mitchell’s famous song “River.” The singer turned the usual stage of the show into a winter wonderland for Christmas songs. Her blue light illuminated the singer as she performed a simplified performance.

She chose to go on stage with music director Jason Halbert and guitarist Jaco Caraco instead of the usual full band. The calm setup gave her performance her raw quality and elicited the tender feelings of her song, her longing and the desire to escape.

“Come on Christmas / They cut down trees / They stand reindeer / And sing a song of joy and peace / Oh, I wish I had a river / I can skate “It was,” Clarkson sang.

The track was off Mitchell’s 1971 album Blue And it has become one of the most iconic songs from the singer. Mitchell released a new music video for this song last year to commemorate her 50th anniversary.
