Sailors cheer as Canada’s men score their first World Cup goal despite defeat

Maritime officials gathered in droves on Sunday to watch Canada’s men’s soccer team take on Croatia at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The 2022 tournament will be the team’s first World Cup appearance since 1986.

“This place is buzzing,” says college student Faiyaz Tanim, who came to the HFX Sports Bar & Grill to watch the game. “Let’s go to Canada!”

The huge crowd was eagerly, anxiously and loudly supporting the team’s winning game. They lost him 1-0 to Belgium in the opening match of the tournament.

“This is an incredibly exciting time for Canadian football,” said Halifax MP Andy Fillmore.

Just over a minute into the game, Alfonso Davies made history by scoring the first Canadian Men’s World Cup goal.

The bar fans cheered.

In nearby New Brunswick, many fans cheered when Canada took a 1-0 lead at a watch party in Fredericton.

“We love Canada and today we are Canada.

Moura wore a Brazilian jersey with a red shirt underneath and waved the Canadian flag after Davis’ goal.

Sadly for Canadian fans, Croatia scored four consecutive goals to win 4-1 and keep Canada out of World Cup contention.

Still, people want the world stage to help the game grow.

“I’m a huge soccer fan — it’s been my whole life — I know soccer is a niche thing in Canada, but hopefully this Canada [team] Joshua McNaughton, who attended the game at a sports bar in Halifax, said:

“Looking around here, it’s packed,” says self-proclaimed football fan Missy Serral, who holds a season ticket to the Halifax Wanderers Club. He said, “I think I’ve discovered that there are more sports in Nova Scotia…and this is one of the best sports he’s ever done.”

“I think football has grown a lot,” says Lise LeBlanc. “When I was playing soccer, there was very little soccer.

Unfortunately, this loss means Canada will not be able to advance to the next round. But Denton Froese, decked out in Canadian colors with a flag on his side, finds positives from the game.

“World Cup spirit – It’s a pleasure to see Canada come this far and win all the World Cup qualifiers,” he says. “They have proven they deserve to be on this stage last year and now it’s just a celebration to be here.”

Canada will face Morocco in their final group stage match on Thursday to wrap up the tournament.
