Katie Couric has made a candid announcement about her health.

On Wednesday, the television personality and journalist shared a blog post on her website revealing she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Couric, 65, went for an appointment for a Pap smear test scheduled for May. While at her clinic, her gynecologist told her she was also due to have a mammogram. The following month, the former “Today” show anchor booked a mammogram date. She remembered Dr. Drossman telling her it was important for her to have a biopsy. It could be scar tissue. ”

On June 21, Couric received an urgent text message from her doctor.

“A text came in: ‘Please call the office to discuss the biopsy results. I tried calling your cell. Your mailbox is full,'” she elaborated in a blog post. Did.

After some time, she was told that she had breast cancer.

“I called back and Dr. Drosman answered the phone immediately. ‘The biopsy is back. It’s cancer. You should be fine, but we need to make a plan,'” she wrote. .

Couric recalled feeling “bad” and said that “the room started spinning.” Many questions started running through her head as she thought about her next steps. She also couldn’t help but think about her history of cancer within her family, including her ex-husband Jay Monahan, who died in 1998 after battling colon cancer.

“My sister Emily’s pancreatic cancer killed her at the age of 54, just when her political career was really taking off,” she explained. “Her mother-in-law, Carol, was battling ovarian cancer, which she was fighting when she buried her son, a year and nine months before she died herself. ”

Despite the tragedy, Couric said some of her family had “a better outcome.” Both of her parents underwent cancer treatment.

“We decided to have a ‘breast-conserving’ surgery, aka a lumpectomy,” she wrote, sharing the plan devised by her and Dr. Drosman. “She made an incision right around my areola.

Couric underwent surgery on July 14th. Her pathology showed her clean lymph nodes. However, she planned to undergo radiotherapy and medication for the next five years.

This month she started radiation.

“I don’t know how many times I’ve thanked God that it’s now 2022 during this experience,” Couric said, referring to the COVID-19 pandemic that has delayed many patient appointments.
