JT Poston Completes Wire-to-Wire Victory at John Deere Classic

Silvis, Illinois-JT Poston won a wire-to-wire victory at John Deere Classic’s second PGA Tour title and British Open spot on Sunday.

Before the day on the TPC Deere Run, Poston finished three strokes ahead with a two-under 69, ahead of fellow British Open qualifiers Christian Bezidenhout and Emiliano Grillo by three strokes.

“It’s difficult,” Poston said. “Wire-to-wire, having a lead for a long time, it’s hard to think of that thin line all week long. I tried to stick to the game plan.”

Poston finished with 21 under 263. He started in 62, 65 and 67 rounds.

Bezuidenhout shot 66 and Grillo shot 69.

“I knew I needed a solid week,” Grilo said. “I had to play well, move up the rankings and work next year. It was more important to me than going open. Now that I have both, it’s pretty special.”

Former Rutgers player Christopher Gotterp in the sponsor-free field had 66 in fourth place tie with Scott Stallings (70) and 17 under.

“I’ll further verify that I belong here. To be honest, there wasn’t the best one this week. It was a surprising hit, but it didn’t quite work until it got off at once. “

Poston birdieed the first three holes, bogey 5th and 6th, and par the next 10. He made 4 feet for a birdie on the 17th of a par 5 and pared on the 18th.

“I was just trying to breathe,” Poston said. “It really was. I think I was much more nervous than the first few days. I was just fighting. I’m sure I can play with those nerves from today onwards and this week onwards. I think. You can still win, but given the pressure, try to win here and still shoot a solid score. “

A 29-year-old from Hickory, North Carolina, won the Travelers Championship Connecticut a week after finishing second. He also won the 2019 Wyndham Championship.

The British Open will take place July 14-17 on the Old Course in St Andrews.

“I can’t wait,” Poston said. “I’ve always wanted to play at any venue, but the first venue is St Andrews and 150, and I can’t wait to get there and see what it looks like.”
