Janelle Monáe used the BET Awards to send a powerful message to the Supreme Court following a recent decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade case.
“I want to give a special special cry to black women, black queer artists and black non-binary artists,” Monae said at the ceremony.

“These artists create art on our own terms, own our truths, control and crack down on our bodies, my bodies, and our decisions, my decisions. Express yourself freely and rudely in the world you are trying to do. ”
She continued, “F *** You, the Supreme Court. I know we are celebrating us now. We are definitely worthy of celebrating, especially now. You need to celebrate your art by protecting your rights and the truth. ”
Host Taraji P. Henson also spoke of the Supreme Court’s decision in the opening statement following Rizzo’s performance...

“It’s a damn time to talk about the fact that guns have more rights than women. It’s a sad day in America,” he said. “A weapon that can take a life is more powerful than a woman who can give it a life — if she chooses to do so.”
