Hashtag Trends Oct 21 – Block Car Subscriptions. Parlor leaks contact information.Texas sues Google

New Jersey tries to block in-car subscriptions, Parlor leaks VIP contact information, and Texas sues Google over data collection.

Welcome to hashtag trending. This is Tom Li, the host on Friday, October 21st.

New Jersey is moving to ban in-car subscriptions. A new trend is seeing automakers locking features already installed in vehicles behind paywalls. It can be anything from heated seats to remote starts. The bill, proposed by two lawmakers, would prohibit automakers from charging for features already in cars. One loophole, however, is that it only applies to features that don’t cost the manufacturer. In other words, if an automaker can prove there is an ongoing cost to a particular factor, it can justify the claim. Violations can subject manufacturers to $20,000 per violation.

Instead of copying recipients using blind carbon copy, which hides all recipient email addresses, email was sent using normal copy, exposing the recipient list. The list included contact information for verified Parlor members and investors, including US Senator Ted Cruz and former US President Donald Trump.

According to Reuters, Google plans to sue because users can turn off data collection.

Microsoft Excel auto-formatting numbers to dates has long been a meme. But for scientists studying human genes, it’s no fun. This error occurs frequently and may corrupt some data entries. These scientists use letters to represent genetic components, sometimes vaguely resembling dates. For example, Excel automatically converts his MAR1 to March-1. There is also no easy way to turn off this feature. Worse, even if the data is properly formatted, exporting it to another computer may automatically convert it.
