InnoTech Alberta Creates Solutions for Environmental Issues, The Canadian Business Journal

Edmonton, Alberta, March 10, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — InnoTech Alberta (InnoTech), a subsidiary of Alberta Innovates, has announced its success in the Clean Resource Innovation Network (CRIN): Reducing Environmental Footprint Technology Contest. The two projects will share $ 1.85 million and provide real-world solutions for addressing high-priority environmental issues across the oil and gas industry.

Two teams, led by InnoTech researchers, will explore new technologies to address the environmental challenges facing the industry. CRIN announced a reduction contest for environmental footprint technology in March 2021. As a result, 17 projects from across Canada have been awarded $ 44.6 million to consider:

  • Water technology development,
  • Methane emissions, monitoring, quantification, and reduction,
  • Land and well reclamation, and
  • New hydrocarbon extraction.

One of InnoTech’s successful projects, led by Dr. Haibo Huang, is how underground bitumen recovery reduces water usage and greenhouse gases (GHG) by utilizing alternatives such as dimethyl ether (DME). ) Can be reduced. By using DME for asphalt recovery, this process can reduce GHG emissions by up to 86% and water consumption by nearly 79% compared to steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD). DME is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic.

The second successful InnoTech project, led by Fred Wassmuth, PhD, will look at alternative technologies to help repair and close wells and prevent methane leaks from abandoned wells. There are about 54,000 wells in Canada, and methane is leaking into the atmosphere. Fred and his team are looking at alternative technologies that can help with proper sealing and closure of these wells. By working with industry partners to provide solutions to fill the untreated wells in Canada, we are proposing real-world solutions that will help Canada achieve its Net Zero commitment by 2050.

“Implementing an innovative solution developed by the InnoTech Alberta team can solve GHG emission challenges while further reducing the need for valuable water use in the oil and gas industry. CRIN Encouraged by our investment, we look forward to supporting the industry and addressing some of the industry’s greatest concerns. “

Laura Kirkries, CEO of Innovate, Alberta

“InnoTech Alberta is pleased to receive this support from CRIN. Our success validates and presents the high quality work we do every day. These investments are oil and You will be rewarded for the gas industry dividends. We look forward to the results from these projects. “

Steve McMahon, COO, InnoTech Alberta

Clean Resource Innovation Network (CRIN)
CRIN is a pan-Canada network focused on ensuring that Canadian hydrocarbon resources are continuously developed and integrated into the global energy system. As a “network of networks,” CRIN brings a wide range of skills, knowledge and experience in oil and gas and other industries to technology developers, researchers, governments, investors, academia, entrepreneurs, youth and many other sectors. Tie together. By identifying industry challenges, it creates market drivers for accelerating the adoption of Canada’s environmental, economic, and public interest commercialization and clean technology. CRIN is partially supported by a $ 100 million CAD investment from the Government of Canada’s Strategic Innovation Fund.
