In the souk, a local brewery gets a nod as ‘top dog’
For the record, every bad dog has a day.
Bad Dog Brewing Company won the Business of the Year award from the Sooke Regional Chamber of Commerce and also came in second in the People’s Choice category.
“I never expected to win,” said John Lyle, who co-runs the Bad Dog Brewing Company with his wife of 37 years, Rosie Lyle.
“I was surprised that we won one award, and even more surprised that we won another, because we didn’t even know we were nominated. I told them that there was something wrong on the way back to , but we are certainly honored and humbled by this award.
Brewing has been John’s longtime passion.
John started home brewing 20 years ago. It has always been a dream to turn his work into a business that can be shared with friends, family and community.
In December 2017, the Lyles and their husbands had an opportunity to start a business when they opened Bad Dog Brewing Company on their own property in Otter Point.
There was initially “some barking” before deciding on a name for the business.
“The area of Tugwell Road where we live is called Dog Patch,” said John. “At first I thought about the name, but I didn’t think it had enough of an edge. We have a few bad dogs in the neighborhood, including our Duke and Molly, so we went with the bad dogs.” I decided to go to
It’s a home business in every sense of the word, Rosie explained.
“My son Chris designs all the labels and my other son Paul is the brewer’s assistant. Our food truck operator Fe’ is also doing a great job. We’re really starting to see more people coming out and it’s helping our business.”
Bad Dog Brewing makes 16 different ales, with at least 12 available on tap. Both have loyal patrons, but the couple considers Honey Blonde and 642 Ale to be the most popular by far.
The business will celebrate its 5th anniversary with an event on December 10th.
“We will be offering Dog’s Breakfast, an anniversary ale, and food trucks will serve breakfast from 11am to 7pm,” said Rosie. She said, “The Souk will also have raffle prizes that she can enter by donating cash to her food bank.”
