Technically, when a nine-year-old kid at the time watched a luge match on television in anticipation of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, it could actually have started a few weeks ago.

After something about the sport caught her eye and convinced her parents that she wanted to try it, they slipped a ticket to ride Hodgson’s Christmas stocking on the bottom of Calgary’s Rouge truck. did.

After getting off the track once on Boxing Day, Hodgson was hooked.

“I got on that vehicle, and it was something I had never experienced before,” Hodgson said. “I really like speed and I wanted to try it out and see what happens. It just started from there.

“It was cool to have a truck in the backyard. I think most of us are based in either Calgary or Whistler. Not everywhere we have that opportunity. Ski resorts in every city. It’s not like there is. I was fortunate to be able to be where the luge truck was. “

From there, Hodgson experienced years of training and camping, as well as various ups and downs. All of this was done with the dream of racing for Canada at the Olympics.

That dream came true on Tuesday when a 21-year-old boy was officially nominated for a Canadian team to fight in Beijing, China next month.

Her father, Kevin, knows a lot about what it takes to be successful in the sports world. He is a Managing Director of the Hockey Education Reaching Out Society (HEROS), an organization that empowers young people at risk, and was named the winner of the NHL’s Willy Olly Community Hero Award last year.

After the announcement on Tuesday, the proud dad was shining, but said he was more proud of the work ethic it took for his daughter to reach this point.

“The result is not important, it is the process of getting the result there,” Hodgson said. “That’s the most exciting thing as a parent. It was the most exciting part for my wife and I. I see her working hard for 12 years to set goals and reach them.

“The happiest place in the world is when she’s flying that ice. I think people think luge is a sport for brave people. It’s not. Skills and science. With so many, the challenger disappeared from the sport pretty quickly. You need to know what you’re doing. Just riding a sleigh doesn’t work. She travels at 150 miles per hour and is very Seeing it cool and calm never hurt me. ”

Now, after 12 years of hard work, Hodgson is head-on focusing on the competition in Beijing. There is another World Cup before the Olympics-the team departs at the end of the month-but for all intent and purpose, it’s all about Beijing so far.

The Canadian team is not expected to have a serious fight for medals, but they are a growing and growing young group with amazing abilities.

The rest of the Hodison family will be in Calgary while Makena is fighting in China, and they are not sure exactly what their plans are for race day.

Everyone knows how much work has been done from day one at WinSport to today.

“My dad and I were supposed to go (that day), but when we got there, we didn’t have a helmet that fits his head,” Hodgson said with a laugh. “I ended up going with my mother, and she hated it-she said she didn’t want to go near it again.”

However, a 9-year-old kid who ripped a truck with his mother became obsessed with the sport and created a dream. Twelve years later, she will live that dream in Beijing.
