The current trend is all tech news. Welcome to Hashtag Trends! It’s Thursday, October 14th. I’m your host, Tom Lee.

Special report by Reuters Amazon has revealed that it will copy product and rig search results to boost its products. According to an internal document surveyed by Reuters, e-commerce companies have launched systematic campaigns to create knockoffs and manipulate search results to enhance their products in India. For example, Amazon has duplicated measurements from a popular shirt brand in India called John Miller. According to the article, the Amazon version followed neck and sleeve length measurements to mimic the fit of John Miller’s shirt. Amazon’s tactics seem to affect small businesses. A retailer selling computer accessories said about two years ago that they noticed a decline in mouse pad sales. He quickly discovered that customers were being directed to a version of Amazon that was 60% cheaper. He also said that his product appeared fairly low in search results.

Nvidia’s Arm purchase plans are retreating after the European Union has launched an extensive investigation. According to a Hot Hardware article, regulators around the world are investigating transactions due to their widespread potential impact on the semiconductor industry. The EU Commission is expected to complete the preliminary examination at the end of October. This is followed by a four-month survey. Based on the survey timeline, it is unlikely that Nvidia will be able to complete the transaction by March 2022 as originally planned.

Finally, Google’s iOS Design Chief announced on Twitter that Apple’s own UIKit will be prioritized to phase out Material Design elements for Google apps on iOS. According to an Engadget article, Material Design is Google’s in-house design language. Google uses this to unify the look of the app across different platforms. Migrating to UIKit saves developers time when it comes to app development. Google’s iOS design chief said he believes the move will reduce the time the team spends writing custom code, making releases faster and more frequent.
