Heavy snow and strong winds expected for much of the Okanagan

Environment Canada is calling for a period of heavy snow and strong winds later tonight (Nov 26) in most of the Okanagan.

A special weather statement issued Saturday morning said parts of interior British Columbia could receive 5 to 10 centimeters of snow overnight, with winds of 30 to 50 km/h. gusts are expected.

The federal agency lists Vernon, Kelowna, and Penticton as areas affected.

“A strong Pacific cold front will sweep inland from north to south later today and into tonight,” the statement read. “A heavy snow belt and strong northwest winds associated with the front will reduce visibility for about a few hours. Many areas will see 5 cm of snow, but higher areas will see 10 cm of snow. There is a possibility.”

After rain is expected Saturday, Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton will see a 40% chance of gusty winds on Sunday.

But at Penticton, Environment Canada adds that gusts can be “heavy.”

Temperatures in all three cities are expected to stay above zero through Monday morning (28 November). The forecast for next week is -2°C to -6°C.

On the road, the Merritt-to-Kelowna Okanagan Connector remains on watch for winter storms after special warnings were issued early on Friday.

Dangerous winter conditions are expected tonight, but Environment Canada said the snow in the connector will end early Sunday morning once the front system leaves the province.

Drivers are urged to consider postponing non-essential travel until the situation improves.

“In heavy snow and blizzards, visibility can suddenly drop to near zero.”
