Guy Lafleur remembered at the funeral that everyone had “time for everyone to enjoy”

The legend of the Montreal Canadiens, Guiller Frere, is praised for his life and illustrious career at a national funeral that pays homage to the generosity, ambition and passion he embodied until the death of the great hockey man and family.

Lafleur’s friend and former teammate Serge Savard said that even if the hockey icon is the league’s top scorer and player, Lafleur always puts the team first.

“He was a guy on the team. He never felt bigger than the team,” Sabad said outside the church. “He was a wonderful and humble superstar.”

Crowds gathered outside Queen Mary of the World Cathedral without running out of La Fleur’s iconic # 10 jersey. They line up along Rennelevesque Boulevard in the heart of downtown, and the ceremony began at 11:00 am.

As the line progressed from the Bell Center, fans shouted “Guy, Guy, Guy,” and police officers lined up the cars. The Canadiens flag-covered La Fleur’s casket carefully climbed the stairs for the final farewell.

He won the Stanley Cup five times and died of lung cancer on April 22 at the age of 70.

The Hockey Hall of Fame, Yvon Kurnoyer, Larry Robinson, Guy Carboneau, and Patrick Roy were one of the first to pay homage to the Hubs legend.

Former teammate Robinson recalled that Lafrule said, “Play every game as if it were the last game.”

“No one has embodied that philosophy as much as Guy,” Robinson said. “He not only played each game to the fullest, but also tried to live his life on the ice to the fullest.”

He was known for his skills, but Canadians owner Geoff Molson described La Fleur as someone who has “time for everyone to enjoy.”

“He just spoke from his heart, and his heart was passionate,” Molson said.

His son, Martin Lafleur, said his father made time for his loved ones, and “even for those he didn’t know.”

He added that his dad wasn’t perfect, but he did everything he could to make sure his mother and brother were happy and lacking anything. “Dad, thank you for all the value you gave us. We love you,” he said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was on the guest list of the service and spoke to reporters before the ceremony.

“Today is a day to thank Guy Lafleur for everything he has given us over the years,” Trudeau said. “All wins, all inspirations, great games he played, as well as his deep humanity.”

The NHL Hall of Fame and fan favorites came from Que’s Thurso. Besides playing with Habs, Lafleur adorned the ice with the New York Rangers and Quebec Nordiques.

“Today we are all proud,” said François Legor, Premier of Quebec. “He was the best player. We were very proud that the guy from here was the best hockey player in the world.”

The final farewell will take place after the corpse, also known as the “flower,” is open to the public at the Bell Center on Sundays and Mondays. Thousands of fans appeared in the team’s arena to pay homage.

A temporary shrine in front of the statue of the late hockey great is adorned with flowers, gloves and a message of sympathy.

The Canadians Hockey Club said in a statement that the Canadiens had accepted a national funeral as a way to respect the general public who had supported Laughle for many years and to share their grief with the community.

According to the Quebec Government, the country’s funeral is “reserved for those who have influenced political life, for example, as determined by the government.”
