SD61 students design stickers to remind them to turn off the lights when the classroom is empty.
Students in the Greater Victoria School District (SD61) are saving energy while having fun.
In SD61’s new lights-out initiative, students design stickers for electrical switch covers that encourage staff and students to turn off lights when the classroom is empty.
The stickers cost less than 5 cents to make and the district believes they can save as much as 10% on lighting energy costs.
“The Greater Victoria School District is committed to creating more sustainable learning communities and providing opportunities for students to participate in practical initiatives that support this goal,” said Superintendent Deb Whitten. increase. “Involving students in energy-saving projects not only increases their engagement in learning, but also helps develop lifelong energy-saving habits.”
The program was piloted at Tillicum Elementary this fall, and students from Hillcrest and Torquay Elementary Schools are currently participating in the initiative.
