Gray County emergency departments will be temporarily closed this weekend

Gray County hospital’s emergency department will be temporarily closed this weekend due to staffing shortages.

According to South Bruce Gray Health Center (SGBHC), the emergency department at the Durham site will be open from 5:00 pm Saturday, August 6 to 7:00 am on Sunday, August 7 and from 5:00 pm on Sunday, August 7. Closed until 7am. Monday 8th August.

“All efforts were made to locate emergency department personnel, but without success,” SBGHC wrote in a statement on its website.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of the community as we continue to face severe pressure from staffing shortages. think.”

According to SBGHC, Durham Hospital’s closet emergency departments are:

  • Hannover (20km)

  • Mount Forest (25km)

  • Markdale (28km)

  • Walkerton (28km)

  • Chesley (36km)

  • Owen Sound (46km)

  • Palmerston (46km)

The hospital network said it had previously identified risks that could scale back services if staffing issues persisted.

“SBGHC had identified the risk of future limited-time service cuts when the Chesley Emergency Department reopened last month if the Health Human Resources (HHR) situation worsened,” SBGHC said. I am writing.

The SBGHC said anyone needing urgent medical attention should call 911 to take them to the nearest emergency department or call 811 to contact Health Connect Ontario for non-urgent healthcare needs. I said there is.

In the past few months, emergency departments across the state have closed due to a shortage of medical workers, often cited as a cause of burnout due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yesterday, Montfort Hospital in Ottawa’s eastern edge announced that its emergency department would be temporarily closed overnight this weekend as the hospital deals with an “unprecedented shortage” of nurses.

The Emergency Department will be closed Saturday and Sunday from 7:30 pm to 7:30 am. Temporary closure is in effect until 7:30 AM on Monday.

On Friday, unions representing 120,000 hospital workers called on state governments to take immediate action to address the growing staffing crisis.

Unions are urging states to repeal laws limiting public sector wage increases to 1%, introduce new financial incentives to discourage retirement, and invest in on-site support such as childcare.

Earlier this week, Ontario’s vice president of health, Dr. Chris Simpson, told CP24 that the staffing shortages affecting hospitals were a “crisis.”

Prime Minister Doug Ford said earlier this week that Ontarians will continue to receive care when they need it, but reiterated calls for more financial help from the federal government to address the labor shortage.
