Your phone’s lock screen is supposed to protect you from the outside (and accidental unlocking in your pocket). Once locked, the device cannot be opened without a passcode, face scan, or fingerprint. If you lose your mobile phone or someone snatches it You can rest assured that they can do nothing with it.except now thanks they can Recently discovered vulnerabilities Allow anyone to bypass the lock screen of your Android device.

Bleeping Computer reports, cybersecurity researcher David Schütz has found a way to unlock both Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 5 without knowing the passcode. Happened after 3 incorrect entries. His SIM card was locked so he entered PUK (Personal Unblocking Key) to restore it.

However, once the SIM was restored, Pixel asked him to scan his fingerprint. Pixels (and most phones) require a passcode to be entered to unlock after a reboot, so this shouldn’t happen. There is no option to unlock the phone using the fingerprint until the passcode unlock is successful.

From there, Schütz realized there was a legitimate security flaw here. If an attacker inserts his own SIM into his target’s Android and he enters his SIM PIN incorrectly three times, he can enter his PUK of the SIM to create a new SIM PIN. Once done, it bypasses the lock screen completely and accesses the phone. You can see a hypothetical attack in action in the video below.

Schütz reported the flaw to Google in June of this year, but it took five months for Google to finally push a patch.Still nice there teeth Patch: It’s not clear how long this vulnerability has actually been around. Millions of Androids are at risk.

How to fix Android’s latest lock screen security flaw

If you have a smartphone running Android 10, 11, 12, or 13, you must install the November 2022 Security Update to patch this vulnerability. If you have already installed the patch, you are good to go. Otherwise, install it as soon as possible.

To install security patches on Android, Settings > System > System Update, then allow the OS to search for new updates. If there is one available, you can download and install it from here. You can also check for security updates from Settings > Security > Google Security Checkup.
