Github Partially Revives Tornado Cash Codebase, Puts Open Source Code in Read-Only Mode – Bitcoin News
Github, Microsoft’s internet hosting and software development subsidiary, has lifted some of its Tornado Cash repositories following recent sanctions imposed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Github’s decision comes after the U.S. Department of the Treasury updated its public information, noting that Americans can copy, view, and discuss open source code. Github partial restore allows repository visitors to see his Tornado Cash codebase in read-only mode.
Github reverts Tornado Cash repository to read-only mode
The cryptocurrency community has been discussing Github, an internet hosting and software development platform. This is after Github decided to partially revive Tornado Cash’s open source code on its platform. On August 8, 2022, the US Treasury Department’s Regulatory Watchdog OFAC authorized Tornado Cash on Ethereum Mixer and several Ethereum addresses associated with the platform. Once the OFAC sanctions were announced, third-party platforms started taking action and one open source programmer was banned from his Github.

Updates to OFAC’s Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) also cover open source code related to Tornado Cash. “The copying of open source code by a U.S. person and making it available for viewing by others online, and the discussion, teaching, or inclusion of open source code in written publications is subject to U.S. sanctions. It’s not prohibited by the rules,” the department noted.
Following an update to the FAQ about ten days ago, Ethereum developer Preston Van Loon said: report Github partially reviving the Tornado Cash codebase and unbanning codebase contributors. “Github has lifted the ban on the Tornado Cash organization and contributors on the platform,” said the developer. “Everything seems to be in ‘read-only’ mode, but that’s a step up from outright banning.
