The mother of a 5-year-old girl thanks everyone who saved her daughter’s life after she was found wandering on TTC tracks near Warden subway station.
The mother, one of her seven children, named her daughter Skye, is an escape artist of sorts and knows how to unlock all seven safety/childproof locks on the townhouse door. There is
She said her 3-year-old daughter was awake at the time, opened the safety lock on the steering wheel, and her 5-year-old walked out the door.
“She cracked it open. I think Skye, her autistic daughter, saw the handle coming off,” the mother said. “She took the approach and moved her dining chair to her back door.”
“Then she climbed up and pulled two sliding locks.”
That’s when the girl ran outside and began a potentially dangerous adventure on the TTC truck.
She said her daughter was gone about 20 minutes before she realized she was missing.
Around 1:30 am, her daughter sneaked out of the townhouse and left early in the morning to reach the TTC tracks heading to Warden Underground Station.
By noon, TTC personnel had walked the track, heading west on a well-trodden path, through thick bush, and checking for gaps in the railing on the south side of the track.
Workers believe the girl was walking along Route 600. This is her third rail, highly electrified, with a wooden cover over it to protect maintenance workers.
Luckily, the westbound driver of the train leaving Warden station found the girl, stopped the train, got off and took her to safety.
It is said that the operator returned to the station and called the police, quickly finding the girl and reuniting her with her desperate mother.
“She had just gotten off the train when me and the police got to the station,” said her mother. She said, “She’s glad to see that she doesn’t understand what she’s done.”
Stuart Green, a spokesperson for TTC media relations, praised the keen-eyed conductor for spotting the girl.
“Trains were heading west from Warden station, but they weren’t running,” Green said. “We were due back to Greenwood Yards for the night. The driver, who must have been Eagle Eye, spotted this kid walking along the planks covering the 600 volt power lines, stopped the train, and sent the child to the train.” They were able to drop her off and hand her over to the police so she could be reunited with her family. It’s really quite a heads up job by our operators and this is how many It could have ended tragically in one way or another, and I’m so grateful that it didn’t.”
Greene said an investigation is still underway as to how the child ended up on the tracks.
“We’ve pulled the video from the station. There’s no evidence that the child entered the station,” Green said.
“She was found at 1:40 a.m., found on a railroad track. Paramedics attended. She was uninjured and was reunited with her mother,” said Const of Toronto Police. Laura Brabant.
“There are no criminal charges,” Brabant added.
