Funeral Details for York Police Officer Travis Gillespie

Funeral of York Policeman Const. Travis Gillespie is scheduled for Thursday.

Gillespie, who was 38 years old at the time of his death, was killed on September 14 in a head-on collision on Major Mackenzie Drive East between Richard Parson Drive and Warden Avenue in Markham. A York police officer assigned to the District 2 Uniform Patrol was on his way to work when the crash occurred at 6am.

Markham’s other driver, Haoju Zhou, 23, was charged with death due to manipulative injury and death due to dangerous driving.

According to the Chapel Ridge Funeral Home website, Gillespie is survived by his wife, parents and brother.

“[Travis] He was known for his boundless energy, strength, courage, determination and most of all, his wonderful smile, positive and caring personality.

“He had a natural ability to gravitate toward those who needed guidance and support through various life struggles, friends and even strangers. I became part of the family.”

A service for officers will be held at Chapel Ridge Funeral Home at 8911 Woodbine Avenue in Markham on September 22, beginning with a visit at 11:00 a.m., followed by a service at 1:30 p.m.

Gillespie’s death marks the death of two police officers in the Greater Toronto Area last week. Toronto Police Department. Andrew Hong died in his September 12th shooting. Hong’s funeral will be held on Wednesday.
