Children’s Hospital in London, Ontario.Cancellations, reduced surgeries

Children’s Hospital in London is canceling and cutting back on surgeries to cope with an influx of patients amid rising respiratory illnesses across the state.

The London Health Sciences Center (LHSC) said it made the decision to reduce surgical activity at its children’s hospital late last week to “address a significant surge in emergency patient healthcare volumes”.

“This is a very difficult decision to make and I hope we didn’t have to make it,” Nash Saeed, director of the Children’s Hospital, said in a Nov. 22 news release. “The decision to reduce surgical activity is necessary to ensure that our team is able to meet urgent care and immediate needs.”

Syed added that the hospital will contact families affected by scheduled surgeries and work to reschedule surgeries in a timely manner.

According to the LHSC, occupancy has peaked and hospitals don’t have enough resources to keep up with demand.

“Children’s hospital inpatient bed occupancy is now at 115%, better than we experienced at the height of the pandemic. The average time is 6 to 8 hours,” the LHSC said in a release.

According to the LHSC, children’s hospitals responded to a worsening situation by expanding inpatient capacity by 117%, expanding critical care capacity by 150%, and leveraging pediatric ambulatory space to expand the hospital’s emergency department capacity. It reduces the burden.

The hospital also transfers children over the age of 14 to adult Intensive Care Units (ICU) when safe and necessary. The move follows an announcement earlier this month by the Ontario Critical Care COVID-19 Command Center to move teenage critical care patients to adult ICUs to free up space at children’s hospitals that are experiencing a surge in pediatric ICU patients. It follows guidance advising hospitals to admit.

The LHSC said it will continue to evaluate and adjust its operational decisions as the situation evolves.

Last week, Toronto’s Sick Children’s Hospital also began putting some surgical procedures on hold to “maintain critical care capacity” amid a significant increase in patient numbers.

Many children’s hospitals in Ontario have reported significant increases in patient numbers recently due to a surge in respiratory viruses such as influenza and COVID-19. They’ve also recently seen beds in intensive care units filled.

To limit the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses, the LHSC urges the general public to keep their immunizations up to date, stay home when sick, wash their hands regularly, and stay safe in public. encourages the wearing of masks in indoor environments.
