Former Senator Don Meredith charged with sexual assault by Ottawa police

Former Canadian Senator Don Meredith has been charged with three counts of sexual assault and one count of criminal harassment by Ottawa police.

The Ottawa Police’s Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Section indicted Meredith on Saturday after investigating sexual assault allegations reported by adult women dating back to 2013 and 2014.

In a statement, police said Meredith was indicted on Saturday and released on a promise to appear in court. said there was a need.

A Pentecostal minister, Meredith was appointed to the Senate by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper. He served from his December 2010 until his retirement in May 2017.

The resignation came after the Senate Ethics Committee recommended that Meredith be banned from the Red Chamber for her affair with a teenage girl. Meredith resigned before facing an expulsion vote, so she was eligible to collect congressional pensions, Finance Committee officials confirmed at the time.

In 2020, the Senate paid nine former Meredith employees $498,000 in compensation.
