Drex was at home watching TV after dinner last Friday when he felt a strange sensation.

“It was really weird. I felt like I had to puke and have a bowel movement at the same time,” he said.

He decided to lie down and crawled onto the bed. His dog Andy would usually crawl next to him for a cuddle. But this time his Chihuahua stood by his bed and looked at him as if something was wrong.

Then the 43-year-old man began to feel a tightness in his chest, as if something heavy was crushing his heart.

I panicked and called my husband, but he was at work and couldn’t answer. She then called her friend who told her to immediately hang up on her and call her 911.

Firefighters arrived at the home in about 10 minutes, Drex said, and paramedics arrived another 10 minutes later. they took him to the hospital. In the emergency room, doctors performed an electrocardiogram and confirmed that he was likely having a heart attack.

“Within 20 minutes of arriving in the emergency, they immediately inserted the stent,” says Drex. “They said we have to do it now.”

Doctors later told me that one of his arteries was completely blocked and the other was 80%. His three other arteries were also clogged, but less severely and didn’t need the tiny mesh his tubes to stay open.

On Monday, Drex had a second stent that blocked 80% of the artery.

The heart attack was a wake-up call, Drex said.

Ironically, Drex was interviewing TC Carling, president of the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation, on Jack 96.9’s morning show the morning he had his heart attack. The foundation is a non-profit organization working to improve men’s health and reduce the risk of chronic disease.

“We were talking about how men don’t take their health seriously,” Drex said.

“And stupidly, I was one of them. I didn’t listen to my body. I didn’t take it seriously, because you were having a heart attack, but no, you’re having a heart attack.

In retrospect, Drex says he was sick and sluggish last year. His lifestyle and diet – “I like good food,” he admitted – didn’t help.

He also has a family history of heart disease. His grandma needed his 4 bypass surgeries and his dad had to have his 3 bypass surgeries.

He shared his health scare on Twitter and thanked local firefighters and paramedics for their care. It attracted hundreds of anti-vaccine critics who blamed it.

Drex has previously spoken out in support of science and a COVID-19 vaccine, calling them a public health problem. Online attacks and misinformation were “very demoralizing,” he said .

Some of the messages were vicious and spiteful, and he blocked many accounts and locked his Twitter account.

Meanwhile, he urged others to take care of their health.

That’s exactly what Drex, who just got married in August, is trying to do. This includes getting your body used to the cocktail of heart medications it needs and making lifestyle and dietary changes.

“What I love now should be in moderation…it should be.”
