Big River author Carla Brydek shared her appreciation for the natural world and all its curiosities as she read the work published at the John M. Quelenaele Public Library on the evening of November 21st.

“In this collection, I was definitely writing longer poems than in my first collection. I was trying to figure out who I was and acknowledging the big changes in my life,” she explained.

Since its first publication in 2005, Braedek has embraced the larger concept and further developed the history behind the poem. She has moved away from her past short idea snippets and is now moving on to larger projects such as personal essay writing.She has learned that poetry and essay writing go hand in hand. . “I love language music,” Breidek said. “I am happy that I was able to convey that through my essay.”

In previous years, she usually followed a “free-writing” method of writing poetry, but Braidek said this was not the case for essays.

“It’s often the event that triggers the beginning,” she said. “When I think back on all the essays I’ve written so far, they all stem from one incident of hers, and they’re very interesting. I write it and it goes where it goes. Expectations Sometimes the ending outside is a little scary.”

In the next step of her writing career, the local writer hopes to compile a collection of both personal essays and poems for her next book.

Braidek’s achievements are recognized throughout North America.
