Facebook Smartglasses Introduced “Sooner or Soon” in 2021 — No AR

Facebook Inc.’s planned smart glasses will arrive “sooner or later” in 2021, but hardware chief Andrew Bosworth says they don’t have the kind of digital overlay technology associated with augmented reality.

Built in partnership with Ray-Ban and its parent Luxottica Group SpA, the glasses connect to the device. However, users cannot overlay digital objects on the real-world view, which is the basic element of AR.

“These are certainly connected glasses and certainly offer many features. [but] I’m pretty crazy about exactly what features it offers, “says Bosworth. “We’re excited about it, but we don’t want to exaggerate it. We don’t call it augmented reality, we just call it” smart glasses, “he added.

Facebook first announced plans for AR glasses in 2017, and since then has built several camera features that allow people to project digital images into the real world, such as face-distorting photo filters.

In recent years, the company has invested significant resources in hardware development, acquired virtual reality startup Oculus, and launched a home video device called Portal. According to people familiar with Facebook staff, Facebook’s VR, AR and hardware teams have more than 6,000 employees. This is a larger group than Facebook is working on Instagram and WhatsApp’s billion-user app.

Smart glasses are part of an internal long-term effort to acquire the second largest computing platform after smartphones.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg is a big advocate for both AR and VR, but this first iteration of Facebook’s glasses is the final of augmented reality, a feature that fuses the digital and physical worlds through lenses. Does not offer a promise.

Bosworth will not reveal the future set of eyeglass features, but said it is in line with Facebook’s broader philosophy of AR, which puts technology around human interaction to enhance its “presence.” ..

A common situation quoted by Bosworth is that parents are trying to record memories with their young children. “By the time you make a call, you probably not only missed it, but if you didn’t, you’re probably looking at the real thing. It’s an event, but through your phone,” he said. “With the right technology, it can be out of the way.”

Facebook is the latest technology company trying to make smart glasses.

Google was in the Google Glass category early on. Google Glass never became popular as a consumer device, but found a home to help workers in warehouses and industrial environments.

Snap Inc. has also launched multiple iterations of smart glasses called Spectacles. This allows people to record videos hands-free and transfer them to their mobile phones. Apple Inc. Also manufactures smart glasses.
