Spanish police said an employee of the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid was injured in an explosion while handling letters on Wednesday.
The employee suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital on his own, police said in a statement.
Detectives are investigating the case with the help of forensic and intelligence investigators, the statement added.
The Ukrainian embassy in Spain was not immediately reachable.
The area around the embassy is off-limits, according to state television station TVE.
