Enjoying Every Moment of My Final Battles for Argentina to the Fullest” – Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi expressed his joy in participating in what he described as his “final battles” for Argentina following their 2-0 victory against Canada on Tuesday, securing their place in the Copa America final.

“I’m living these moments like I did in the last Copa America, in the last World Cup… these are my last battles, and I’m enjoying them to the fullest,” Messi told TyC Sports.

The 37-year-old scored Argentina’s second goal in the semifinal win. The world champions will face either Uruguay or Colombia in the final.

Messi’s performance marked a significant improvement from the quarterfinal against Ecuador, where he appeared below his usual standards. In the semifinals, he demonstrated his exceptional skills, linking up effectively with teammates Angel Di Maria and Julian Alvarez, both of whom also found the net.

Currently playing club football for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, Messi has not yet disclosed his plans regarding his participation in the Argentine national team for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

In response to Messi’s comment about his “last battles,” Argentina’s head coach Lionel Scaloni urged for patience and refrained from speculating about Messi’s future.

“We need to give him space; he knows we won’t be the ones closing the door on him. He can stay with us as long as he wants, even after he retires… Let him decide what he wants,” Scaloni stated.

Messi has the opportunity to secure a third consecutive major trophy with Argentina, building on their recent successes in the 2022 World Cup and the 2021 Copa America.

The Argentine superstar, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, acknowledged the contributions of long-time teammates Di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi. He emphasized that the team’s recent triumphs reflect their resilience and perseverance through previous challenging periods without trophies.

“It’s incredible what this group has achieved, what the Argentina national team has been doing, because it gives value to all the tournaments that I and the previous generation have played in,” Messi remarked on TyC Sports.

“It’s not easy for us to reach another final, to compete again for the championship,” he added after the victory at MetLife Stadium, acknowledging the challenges faced during their journey to the final.

“This Copa has been tough, with evenly matched teams, difficult pitches, high temperatures… to be in another final is something to savor,” Messi concluded.
