Hands-on sessions encourage students to work together in small breakout groups before coming together to discuss as a class.
“That’s really what this program is about. It’s not me or anyone else standing there lecturing. It’s about putting ideas together and teaching them to your peers,” McHugh says.
Secondary 5 student Leyan Tran shared her experience of racism to help her and her classmates grow up.
“I want to know other perspectives, other people, how they’re experiencing. I also want to put my experience in and see what they can learn from me.” It is,” she said.

“We have to tell them. When something isn’t right, you should put your opinion out there and say how you feel about it, how you feel… offended, etc. I have to tell you,” said Megan Ruscitto, a secondary 5 student.
Forum founders hope to take the learnings from this pioneering group and bring the workshops to a wider audience.
“It is our hope and expectation that we will learn from what we find here, take it and replicate it around the world,” said Hannan.
Together with UN Day of Peace, they plan to turn this into an annual event to teach peace and spread the word to the next generation.
