Aydin Coban, a Dutch national, has been accused of blackmailing, possessing two pieces of child pornography, and seducing children against Amanda Todd, a BC teenager whose story spread around the world after she died by suicide nearly a decade ago. , and was convicted of criminal harassment.

After a day of deliberation, the jury delivered its verdict in the Supreme Court of New Westminster, British Columbia.

Todd’s mother, Carol Todd, sat in the back row of the audience gallery on Saturday taking notes. When Covan returned to court, she repositioned herself within his line of sight.

She reacted strongly whenever her conviction was read out in court.

Coban, who wore a navy blue button-down shirt, showed little reaction when the verdict was read.

Their verdict comes after seven weeks of testimony involving dozens of witnesses, exhibits and evidence presented by prosecutors before closing arguments begin.

Cobain’s attorneys did not seek evidence at trial.

B.C. Supreme Court Judge Martha Devlin told a jury on Friday that Cobain can be found guilty of the charges against him only if Crown proves its allegations beyond a reasonable doubt. Otherwise, she said, they would have to acquit him.

Over the course of several hours, Devlin reviewed the testimony and evidence presented to the jury in the long and complicated trial. She led the jury, explaining the definition of each crime count she swore against Cobain and explaining the criteria Crown had to meet in order to convict him.

Todd committed suicide on October 10, 2012 at the young age of 15 after being exploited online for three years. Before her death, she told her story in her nine-minute video posted on YouTube.

After her death, the video went viral around the world, garnering 14.8 million views as of August.

Coban, 44, had pleaded not guilty to five criminal charges related to Todd’s case, including extortion, possession of child pornography, and child solicitation. He was not charged with Todd’s death.

Criminal attorney Louise Kenworthy closed her case last week, saying there was a “golden trove of information” linking Cobain and Todd’s harassment and blackmail.

Early in the trial, Dutch police testified that a deleted video file called “AmandaTodd.wmv” was played on one of the devices in December 2010, when Todd was being actively harassed. did.

But Coban’s defense argued that sharing the link “is not child pornography.”

The video was sent as a link, but there was nothing to indicate it was stored as data on the seized device, Joseph Saulnier told jurors during the second day of closing arguments.

Defense attorneys also disputed the royal family’s claims that Cobain was behind 22 online accounts that harassed and blackmailed Todd.

Early in the trial, jurors heard from BCRCMP officials who first investigated Todd’s harassment allegations in 2011.

Todd’s parents went to the police because the messages continued after their daughter changed schools.

Todd’s mother, Carol, attended Coban’s trial each day, sitting in the back of the courtroom a few meters away from the prisoner’s box.
