Doug Ford’s approval ratings drop to lowest in nine months: Angus Reid

Doug Ford’s approval ratings have fallen to their lowest levels among other premiers in nine months, according to a new Angus Reed survey.

Ford’s approval rating is 41%, down four points from the last poll in June, shortly after he won a majority in state elections. That’s a long way from her highest approval rating of 69% Ford enjoyed when the pandemic began in March 2020.

Angus Reed cites “speculation about the state’s interest in expanding private health care” as the main reason for the decline.

The Ford administration recently passed a law allowing hospitals to move patients to “temporary” homes while they wait for availability in their preferred home. Those who refuse to move can face costs of up to $400 a day

Similarly, the state is in the midst of negotiations with teachers’ unions over new contracts. While he has pledged to raise the cap imposed when the Conservatives first came to power by more than 1%, Ford has yet to say what that figure will be. A proposal filed with one of his unions last month suggested he get a 2% pay raise for education workers making less than $40,000 a year and a 1.25% pay raise for everyone else. The Union of Civil Servants of Canada (CUPE), which represents 55,000 education assistance workers, has asked the province for an 11.7% annual salary increase.

Among the remaining Canadian prime ministers, Saskatchewan’s Scott Mo enjoys the highest approval rating at 57%, up 6 points from the last survey.

Nova Scotia Prime Minister Tim Houston is next at 53%, down 9 percentage points from the last survey published and down 20 percentage points overall since March 2022.

Outgoing BC Prime Minister John Horgan rose 3 points to 51%. He is the only other prime minister to receive over 50% support in the poll.

The survey will be conducted online from September 19 to 21, 2022, with a representative randomized sample of 3,941 Canadian adults who are members of the Angus Reed Forum, with error bars of + /- 19 out of 20 at 1.5 percentage points.
