Manitoba Govt Reintroduces Bill to Relax Restrictions on Liquor Sales
WINNIPEG – The Manitoba government is making another attempt to relax some restrictions on the sale of alcoholic beverages.
The Progressive Conservative government has introduced a bill to parliament to allow private wine shops and beer vendors to serve alcohol of all kinds.
The bill is similar to one that was introduced last spring and failed to pass before the final session ended.
Liquor and Lottery Minister Andrew Smith said the bill would also make increased security a condition of retail licenses.
The government also introduced a bill to abolish cannabis social responsibility fees, charging retailers 6% of annual revenue.
If the bill is passed, states would instead add a percentage of the federal excise tax on cannabis, said Finance Minister Cameron Friesen, saying the move is income-neutral.
