Does CBD Really Work for Depression and Anxiety?

Extracted from hemp, Cannabidiol or CBD is one among the 400 compounds found in the plant. Studies have linked CBD to relieving physical health problems such as chronic pain, acne, cancer, and epilepsy. In addition, there’s speculation that CBD could be beneficial for treating mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. 

Does CBD help anxiety? Research points towards it. However, we have yet to understand how CBD works and the scope of the research behind it to know whether you should give it a try. Let’s find out. 

Does CBD help anxiety and depression? 

The majority of the studies on CBD and depression were done on animals. While the results have always been positive, there isn’t enough data on human trials to claim one should use CBD for anxiety with confidence. 

A 2018 review from Frontiers In Immunology saw the effects of CBD on brain scans. Doctors could see the anxious feelings lessen visibly. It seems to take away the stress. Since depression causes lots of stress in our brain, removing the stress offers temporary relief from depression. 

Another promising 2018 study in the Journal of Affective Disorders focused on medical CBD users. Again, the researchers kept track of the doses, symptoms, and reports from users to conclude. About 50 percent of the users claimed that their depressive symptoms had improved. 

Researchers saw proof that depressive patients had the best benefit from a higher level of CBD and a lower portion of THC. However, together, they did wonders. 

Many people mistake CBD for THC, as they are both obtained from hemp and marijuana. Truthfully, CBD has more to do with slowed down, calmer brain activity. THC causes spurts of euphoria, which is beneficial but doesn’t last long. 

In general, CBD seems to take away the symptoms caused by anxiety and depression rather than the mental health conditions themselves. 

A 2019 and 2020 study done on rats supports the claims. The 2019 studies focused particularly on the feeling of helplessness. The rats appeared to have more confidence. Since helplessness is a symptom of depression, there’s the belief that it can help with helpless feelings in humans too. 

Of course, we need more research to have conclusive evidence. As you can tell, most CBD studies have been done after 2010. The groundbreaking studies were merely one or two years ago. 

How does CBD help with anxiety and depression? 

We must remember that anxiety and depression have a cause-and-effect relationship with our brain. Stress causes anxiety, which causes stress. Depression makes you sleep less and less sleep makes you depressed. 

Some believe the serotonin levels in our brain lowers because of depression. Others think it’s because of low serotonin levels that people experience depression. Whether one or the other is the reason, serotonin and depression connect. 

This is where CBD comes in. CBD doesn’t magically raise your serotonin level. Instead, it can improve the condition of the serotonins already in your system. 

CBD takes away some of the pain, stress, and sleep disorder from depression. 

Taking away the symptoms gives a depressed person a chance to feel better, work better, and maybe live that long enough to come out of depression faster. 

Many people can’t sleep due to their panicked thoughts from anxiety. CBD produces this calm effect on our brain that these stressful thoughts form slower, enough to let us sleep. 

You have to be careful with your intake, though. Some people experience faster, immediate anxious thoughts if they overdose on CBD. 

It’s not that a person with anxiety and depression would get immediately better with CBD use. CBD won’t take away your depression permanently either. However, since it reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, it can allow you to do tasks in your daily life you wouldn’t have otherwise. 

One study saw the user deliver a public speech with higher cognitive functions and lower anxiety levels by taking CBD before going on stage. 

Who shouldn’t use CBD?

CBD is generally safe unless you have a medical condition. If you take supplements that interfere with CBD, you might experience:

  • Drowsiness
  • Heightened anxiety
  • Dry-mouth. 

If you have any liver-related disease, your doctor would advise you to stay away from CBD. A pregnant woman or someone who is breastfeeding should not use CBD either. 

If you take medication for seizures, you should not try CBD either. These medicines come with side effects, and CBD may accelerate them. 

How can you use CBD?

CBD for mental health can be used in 4 different ways:

Oral intake

You can consume CBD as capsules, oil, or spray. Most of the time, you can eat or drink the product. However, for taste preference, people drink it in coffee or smoothies. 

Vaping

 You can vape CBD oil. However, most doctors would object to this method. You can inhale too much at once. Since the research is still shaky, it’s unclear if inhaling a considerable amount can have an adverse effect on you. If you aren’t a smoker, you won’t enjoy vaping either. You are likely to cough and have an itchy throat the rest of the day. 

Edible

People mix CBD into brownies, gummies, and all kinds of food products. 

People also use CBD as cream and lotion. However, these aren’t helpful for anxiety and depression. Unless your depression is a result of long-term pain. You can benefit from applying CBD topically then.
