Vancouver City Council approves plan to hire police officers, nurses, boost funding – BC

Vancouver’s new city council has approved the first phase of a plan to recruit dozens of new police officers and new mental health nurses next year.

“This fulfills our commitment to employ 100 mental health nurses and 100 police officers and begin the process of addressing the challenges we see across the City of Vancouver,” said ABC Vancouver Coun. Sarah Kirby Jung said.

In a 6-3 vote unitedly supported by members of ABC Vancouver and opposed by Green and One City councilors, the council approved $16 million for the program.

That’s nearly triple the $6 million originally allocated when the motion was first filed, but it could only provide about 57 police officers and 21 nurses.

“Frankly, I know this is going to go because ABC has the majority, but the fact that this number has been challenged in the media and refuted as not accurate is reckless. We’ve seen a shift in the numbers, and they’re “still not accurate as to what the police are predicting,” said Green Coun. Pete Frye said during a discussion on the motion.

The revised funding amount comes as a result of what ABC city council members called “further conversations,” with funding expected to come from the city’s 2023 operating budget.

The new hires are aimed at “expanding mental health initiatives and partnerships” like the Car 87/88 program and other outreach initiatives.

It is not yet clear which programs and services may face cuts to make up for the budget gap.

“Some numbers and a catchy campaign slogan, that’s not how I think we should make decisions,” OneCity Coun. Rebecca Bly told Global News.

“We don’t want to cut subsidies and support to organizations that meet critical needs of our residents.”

City councilors will hold their first 2023 budget meeting at the end of the month, and will also consider a request for an 11% increase in the Vancouver Police Department budget.

“Today is a new day and a new council, so I think this council will take the time to really do budget due diligence,” Kirby-Yung said.

Vancouver’s new mayor, Ken Sim, will take a previously scheduled leave to watch the World Cup in Qatar on Tuesday to green light his key campaign promises from the 2022 elections. I did not attend the council meeting.

In his absence, his party said it was confident the city would be able to recruit the planned 100 new police officers by the end of next year.
