A 28-year-old man was reported missing at noon on Thursday while the ship Carnival Valor was en route to Cozumel, Mexico. The man was with his sister at the Carnival Valor bar at 11 p.m. Wednesday and went to use the restroom, according to Carnival Cruise Line. His sister reported him missing the day after the man did not return to the private room.

The Coast Guard launched a search and rescue team Thursday afternoon to warn nearby vessels to beware.

Coast Guard Lieutenant Seth Gross said the cargo ship later saw the man at the mouth of the Mississippi River, about 20 miles south of Southwest Pass, Louisiana. Gross said the man was identified as a missing cruise ship passenger after being lifted by a helicopter around 8:25 p.m. Thursday.

“He appeared to be suffering from mild hypothermia, shock and dehydration, but his condition appeared stable overall,” Gross told WWL-TV. He added that the man was receiving medical care.

Gross called the rescue “a holiday miracle, especially on Thanksgiving.”
