Mounties said on May 9 that the victim had received a call from a man who claimed to be a grandson who needed US $ 8,000 for bail. Another man, who claims to be a police officer, confirmed the story and told the victim that his grandson had been arrested for possession of drugs and needed bail.

The RCMP said the courier has decided to go to the victim’s house to collect money and send it to law enforcement agencies. The man reportedly went to the victim’s residence to get the money, and after talking to his grandson, the victim realized it was a fraud.

The victim received another call the next day asking for more money. According to the RCMP, the victim called the police to report the fraud, and the police arrested the man when he went home for the second time.

40-year-old Jeb Trim was arrested and charged with fraud over $ 5,000. The suspect will be released from detention and will appear in the Sherwood Park District Court on June 1.

Mounties has published a photo of Trim and believes that the number of victims associated with this scam could increase.

According to the RCMP, scammers get information from social media platforms and online to collect information about their families and use those details to convince victims that the scam is legitimate.

Mounties advises you not to give your contact information, personal information, or cash, and to check with your family to hear the full story first.
