In the more than 35 years I have worked as a hospital nurse here in Windsor, there have been many advances in nursing, science and medicine.

During this time, it has become increasingly difficult to provide quality care to patients. This is demoralizing and a fundamental reason why nurses leave the profession.

What has also become apparent over the years is the gradual dismantling of the public healthcare system by governments of all kinds. I believe this is an attempt to discourage Canadians and undermine our commitment to providing equal health care for all.

I have a feeling that this redoing is pushing us to where we are today.

We are here because of pandemics, the elderly, mental illness, or other familiar scapegoats. The cause is systemic, policy-driven, top-down, and we expect Canadians to abandon their principles when faced with this collapsing system.

One need only refer to the 2009 Royal Commission on the Future of Healthcare in Canada, led by Roy Romanow, to see that universal healthcare is more than sustainable. This year’s work of his was ignored.

The proposed location of mega-hospitals and the destruction of hospital/ambulance services in city centers is one of a long list of short-sighted government initiatives and policies that undermine our collective health, environment and economic well-being. Just a recent example. What matters is our care and concern for each other.

Also, those with privilege and power will never experience the full negative and tragic consequences of their decisions.
