Teen charged with murder in Calgary cop hit-and-run death to learn fate
A teenager charged with first-degree murder in the hit-and-run death of a Calgary police officer will learn his fate on Thursday.
Sergeant Andrew Harnett died in hospital on December 31, 2020 after being dragged into a fleeing SUV and falling into the path of oncoming traffic.
The defendant, who was 17 at the time and cannot be identified, testified that Harnett and another officer approached the vehicle during a traffic stop and were horrified when Harnett put his hand on the gun.
Criminal attorney Mike Ewenson said the evidence showed beyond doubt that the teenager, now 19, intended to harm Harnett.
Defense attorneys say the suspect is guilty of manslaughter but not murder.
Car passenger Amir Abdurrahman pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to five years in prison.
