Winnipeg Police Charge Jeremy Skibicki In Serial Killing Of 4 Indigenous Women

Skibicki was arrested on May 14, 2022, and is being detained on first-degree murder charges

Late Thursday afternoon, Winnipeg Police Services Homicide Unit confirmed a 35-year-old male, Jeremy Anthony Michael Skibicki, of Winnipeg, currently detained for First Degree Murder for the death of 24-year-old Rebecca Contois, was also responsible for the murders of Morgan Beatrice Harris, a 39-year-old female of Winnipeg and a member of Long Plain First Nation, and that of Marcedes Myran, a 26-year-old female of Winnipeg from Long Plain First Nation. In addition, the Winnipeg Police Services have also linked Skibicki to a fourth female victim who has yet to be identified. She is believed to have been killed on or about March 15, 2022. 

The announcement that the community had a sick and deranged serial killer walking freely among citizens is disturbing. Three of Skibicki’s innocent victims were killed in May of 2022, and all were from the Indigenous community. 

For decades the Indigenous community has advocated for an inquiry into Missing, Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirited people (M.M.I.W.G.T.S.). And for decades, that call went unheard. In December 2015, the federal government announced the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirited people as a key government initiative to end the disproportionally high levels of violence against Indigenous women and girls.

Even after the final report was tabled in June 2019, the epidemic of Indigenous women being killed or missing is still in a state of crisis. More resources and better solutions need to come to the forefront because clearly, the current direction needs a sharp course correction as it is not working. 

In a post on her Twitter feed, the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba for the riding of St. Johns, Nahanni Fontaine, wrote:

“When will the protection of Indigenous women, girls and two-spirited be taken seriously? Winnipeg now has the distinction of having two separate serial killers of Indigenous women. Are we waiting for a third or fourth to rear their murderous heads?

While the WPS have charged this monster with the murders of 4 women, no one should rest easy today. This alleged killer walked amongst us. He was in our city, our neighbourhoods, our places of work. He was not invisible. But our women, girls and two-spirited are.”

MKO Grand Chief Garrison Settee said:

“I am offering my sincere condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Morgan Harris, Marcedes Myran, Rebecca Contois, and the woman who has yet to be identified.

These women were someone’s daughter, sister or mother. It’s tragic and catastrophic for the affected families. Our community has a big hole that has been left behind by acts of violence I cannot understand. I am asking for our community to support the families of the victims in any way that they can.

As the Grand Chief of MKO, I am committed to supporting First Nation women, girls, Two Spirit, and gender-diverse people. Our women are sacred and deserve to live without fear of being harmed. Let us work together to ensure our women will have a safer future.”

As the investigation moves forward, police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the unknown victim. The jacket shown in the photograph is similar to the one the victim may have worn. The investigation may be significantly aided by any information the public can provide.
