The Vancouver Coastal Health Region announced that COVID-19 vaccines for infants and children aged 6 months to 4 years are now available today (August 2nd).
Parents or guardians of children of that age are “strongly” encouraged to enroll their children in the state vaccination system, according to the August 2 VCH Bulletin.
To facilitate the program, 11 special child-centered immunization clinics will operate in VCH communities. Once registered, parents of children will be notified to make an appointment with the nearest clinic.
The VCH estimates that up to 45,000 infants and children in health areas are eligible for vaccination. Statewide, approximately 208,000 are eligible for registration.
“Clinic staff are trained in the delivery of childhood COVID-19 immunizations and are committed to making it a positive experience for families,” said the VCH bulletin. “Most clinics have separate quiet spaces for children with special needs such as autism, sensory processing and needle phobia.”
Information on preparing your child for immunizations can be found on the BC Center for Disease Control website. If parents have any further questions about her childhood COVID-19 vaccinations, VCH recommends calling their family doctor or nurse her practitioner. Health-related inquiries can also be made by calling 8-1-1.
Infants and children aged 6 months to 4 years are generally considered to be at lower risk of adverse health outcomes from COVID-19 infection than older age groups, but vaccination further reduces that risk.
Two doses, 8 weeks apart, are recommended for maximum vaccine effectiveness.
On July 14, Health Canada approved the Moderna SpikeVax COVID-19 vaccine for use in infants and preschool-aged children. In its release, the VCH said the federal agency had “rigorously reviewed efficacy and safety data to ensure the vaccine is safe with a low risk of side effects.”
Health Minister Adrian Dix announced on the Ministry of Health website on July 14 that as of August 2, all local health authorities will offer the vaccine by appointment. Dix said.
“Almost 12 million doses have been administered to eligible people since the vaccination campaign began in BC,” Dix continued. August 2.
